Tracker1989-2004
This compact SUV proved itself to be a fine ecnomical vehicle, good for making its way along any type of surface. Platform: CAMI (Suzuki)
I recently had the rear driver's side brake explode (very long story). I ordered new shoes and a parts kit, but it did not include the Adjusting screw assembly, parking brake strut, link, parking brake lever, brake shoe adjuster pawl, pawl, or ABS ring. Does anyone know where I basically need to rebuild the entire brake assembly. Does anyone know where I can find these aftermarket? Thanks.
I wish I had good news. I would start here. Ask for Terry. He sells new and used parts for Trackers and Vitaras. Suzuki Grand Vitara and Chevy Tracker parts are usually interchangable. One glaring exception are the brakes. Suzuki uses bigger brakes up front. Not sure about the rear drum brakes. These brake parts may or may not fit your Tracker. Sometimes googling the Suzuki part number will show it also fits a Tracker.
I recently did the rear brakes on my 2001 Tracker and wound up re-using the adjuster, the adjustable strut and both levers because in Canada, GM no longer supports the Tracker and there are no after market sources. I contacted Suzuki International and was told that a nearby Mitsubishi dealer could obtain the parts (confirmed) but it was a 6 - 8 week wait for them to be ordered from Japan. If you can source them from a wrecker, do it but prepare yourself for a bear of a job removing the old brake drum. If you need some advice, contact me.

how did you remove the rear brake drum. It feels like the drum is caught on the lip of the drum where is has worn down from the brake shoes.

Some drums have holes where you can thread in 2 - 8mm bolts to push the drums off. This method runs the risk of bending the brake adjuster but I was able to straighten mine. Make sure you have fully released the e-brake (inside the vehicle). If your drums don't have pre-drilled holes, you can drill them, tap the holes and thread in good stout bolts to push the drums off. It all boils down to the ugliest brake job I've ever undertaken. I had considered just cutting the drums off with my angle grinder and if I ever have to do them again, that's probably what I will do - just cut around the circumference of the drum about 1/2" back from the front surface, then pry off the front surface to gain access to the inner workings. You'll have to replace the drums and shoes anyway so why not?

Yes. Build a wooden cradle to hold the angle grinder in position against the drum. Then rotate the drum cutting along the circumference until the front half separates from the back half.
Hi. I found this forum after searching endlessly for a brake adjuster for the left rear side of my 2001 Chevy tracker. Unfortunately it was manufactured after they changed the parts so the Vitara's will not fit mine. I saw this response from someone saying that there is a Mitsubishi dealer that can get these parts ordered. It does say it can take weeks to get the part, but my alternative is to scrap the car and I don't want to do that. It runs very well and it's kind of special to me because it was the last thing my husband bought for me a month before he died. I would appreciate any further info if someone can help me please.
