Default rear grinding

i own an 01 tracker, 4dr, 4wd, auto
and i was driving down the road the other day when something started grinding.
it's an intermittent sound that only that i can only hear when the wheel rotates so far, so basically every few meters of driving i hear it. i did have a problem with a spring in the rear brakes once before but it was a lot more constant sounding.
i'm presently in the process of tearing apart my rear brakes to check for anything screwey going on but so far no joy on finding the problem, anyone have any suggestions or go through anything similar?

thanks for any help
