Default Tracker 101: intro to door panel removal

This tutorial shows how to remove the passenger door panel.

The mirror cover has to be pulled straight back.

I used these body panel tools but any thin pry bar should work.

The mirror cover is held on by two plastic rivets.

The rivets pop into these two holes in the door frame.

When I pulled off the cover off one rivet stayed with the cover and one stayed in the door frame.

I used the rivet remover tool to recover it. Luckily neither the rivet nor the cover were damaged.

Once the mirror cover is off, remove the Phillips screw from the inside door handle.

Pull the handle towards the door hinges...

... and push off the plastic retainer from the linkage.

Remove the Philips screw from the door pull handle.

These are the locatione of the seven plastic rivets holding the panel to the door.

This is what the rivets look like.

New rivets are available on Amazon.

Pop the power window switch out of the panel.

Use a small screwdriver to release the locking tab.

I managed to remove the panel without any rivets getting broken.

This is the door without the panel.

My door would "clunk" when slammed because the adhesive on the door stiffener had broken loose.

While I was in there I copied down the 5-digit key code stamped on the door lock.

Well done. Also those door handles are cursed, they break if you look at them wrong.

Default Clips

I need some of the clips that hold those small filler panels above the door panels. Any idea where to purchase some?

I could not locate a part number for the plastic rivets.

The closest I could get was the mirror cover panels for a Suzuki Grand Vitara on megazip.net. But there was no indication the plastic rivets were included. It's a longshot but a Chevy parts department might have the GM part number for the rivets. That might help on an ebay search. If that doesn't work out you might get lucky at the junkyard.

I appreciate you looking that up. Maybe the guys at the Chevy parts counter will be able to find the clip part number. It is a very odd style, so substitutes would be difficult.
