Tracker1989-2004
This compact SUV proved itself to be a fine ecnomical vehicle, good for making its way along any type of surface. Platform: CAMI (Suzuki)
Canada mandated Daytime Running Lamps on all new vehicles made or imported after January 1, 1990.
That same year General Motors petitioned the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to
permit US vehicles to be equipped with DRLs like those in Canada. NHTSA said "... the agency remains
neutral with respect to ... the inclusion of DRLs in vehicles ... manufacturers should continue to make
individual decisions regarding DRLs in their vehicles." This is how Chevy dealt with the DRL issue on
the 2001 Tracker.
A small silver-colored DRL module was installed under the dash.
The module contains a circuit (pin 6) that reduces the low beam intensity to 80% of normal. This was intended to
reduce glare and premature bulb failure. The DRL module is designed to operate whenever it sees the key is ON
(12 volts at pin 9), but the switch at pin 6 opens any time the module sees a ground at pins 1,2 or 4. With those
three inputs the DRL module knows if the engine is running (pin 2), the hand brake is ON (pin 4) or the headlights
are manually or automatically turned ON (pin 1).

The conditions above assume the key is in the ON position (12 volts at pin 9).
