I had the transmission replaced in this rig w/ 110,000 miles on it....the dealer messed up the ATF change and wrecked the transmission, so they put a different one in.

Fast forward two weeks. The tranny overall works fine, however I'm now chasing a noticable "thud" sound that occasionally happens after I come to a complete stop at a stop sign. As soon as I completely let off the brake to continue forward this thud occurs. It doesn't happen every time, doesn't cause the car to jerk, and I can't get it to do it by just slowly going down the road and coming to complete starts/stops. Seems like the car had to be going 35 mph + prior, then coming to a complete stop.

I've checked out all of the U-joints and they are solid. One time the sound seems like it's in the back end, the next time it's under me.....very hard to tell.

Thoughts?

 

You need to grease the slip yoke. this is a fairly common problem and the grease is recommended and works. I usually put some grease in at oil changes since mine has a grease fitting.

 

So I assume I disconnect the driveline where it connects into the output shaft of the transfer case....then slip the yoke out?

Yes, Clean out the old grease as best you can and then pack new grease into it. Heavy-Duty Grease NLGI #2 is recommended. I have also heard that Marine wheel bearing grease is good.
