2003 Chevy Trailblazer

Cant turn the ignition (keys) to the off position (battery stays on)

Problem began with a "sticky" shifter button. Removed the shifter boot and began manually engaging the shift park placement mechanism. I did this by pulling the plastic rod (that's INSIDE the metal cylinder, under the shifter boot) UP thus pulling the cable to allow the ignition to be put into the "off" position.

Well my Wife called me last night () and told me the plastic rod pulled out of the metal cylinder. So I drove there and took a look. Doesn't look like anything is broken. As in there looks to be no damage on the plastic rod at all. I drove the Trailblazer home and disconnected the negative battery terminal and called it a night.

So I know what the problem is, but not the solution. I am very mechanically inclined. I fix most everything on all my vehicles. As long as the answer is clear I'll be off and running.
