tie rod misfit, model differences, year modifications?
2002 Chevy Trailblazer LT 4WD 6-cyl - Recently bought an "02 Trailblazer LT. Have rebuilt most of the front suspension (ball joints, wheel hub, cv axles, shift actuator, lower control arm bushing, sway bushings) and put on new tires with an alignment. One day later the seal blew out on the rack & pinion assembly, filling the steering column boot and draining the pump. Bought new rack and pinion as well as new tie rod ends. After a bitch of a battle to get the old out and the new in, I discover the tie rod ends will not fit the steering knuckle. The original rack and tie rods had a 14mm thread at the rack and 12mm thread at the knuckle. The new ones are 16x1.5 at the rack and 14x1.5 at the knuckle, which obviously will not fit the knuckle. So the old tie rods won't fit the new rack and the new tie rods won't fit the knuckle. Oddly enough, the previous owner had the rack replaced and the ink on it indicates it was a used one out of an '08, but it had the smaller threads at the tie rod ends. Anyone else come across this? Anyone got any idea how to proceed? (Cross posted to other forums, kinda desperate to resolve this.)
