test driving an uplander

test driving an uplander
I'm currently test driving a 2008 Uplander. It's a LS with 48,000 miles.
I really like the van, however I have one concern and would greatly appreciate some feedback.
Once the van sufficiently warms up, every so often it sounds as if an electric motor fan kicks on for maybe 3-5 seconds at a time. It kicks on while sitting at idle and sometimes while accelerating from a stop. In my opinion, this fan is noticeably loud and does not sound proper. If it happens to be on while accelerating away from a stop, it sounds awful. It almost sounds like a PTO pump on a big truck.
Is this a common issue? Is it actually an electric fan or is it belt driven?
I hope my description is adequate for your response. I'm happy with the way the van drives, etc but this fan noise doesn't sound right.
Thanks in advance.

Likely the radiator fan(s) kicking on. Is the temp gauge registering about 1/2 way when it starts?
Lift the hood and let the van idle, the fan will start when the temp gets too high. They can be noisy, they are moving a lot of air.
Good luck.

Yes - completely normal. I would bet that you were running the AC or defroster. Its noisy but normal. You'll find that if you don't have the AC or defroster on that it doesn't run 1/2 as much. Just the electric cooling fan in front.

It was the AC compressor. I didn't realize I had the front defrost on. I had a local mechanic listen to it and he agreed it sounded loud, especially while revving up the rpm's.
Dealer didn't want to have it looked at. So I walked away.

kcdr18,
I am glad to see the great responses you have received. I am sorry your dealership did not want to look into this. If you have that experience again, please let us know so we can address it.
