Default abs light= brake pads not on straight????

So the abs light and brake light came on in my 99' venture about 6months after installing new front brake pads. I took it to a local mechanic today and he said the reason the lights on is because someone (me) installed the front brake pads wrong, they werent put on straight as he put it, and because of this a sensor in the wheel hub broke and the rotors need replaced. Is it possible to install brake pads crooked? i always thought they were self adjusting, Ive only done a few brake jobs in my life so i lack experience in this field but maybe someone on here has heard of this?

That's kind of confusing ... so even if you could put the pads on crooked ( which are on the outside )how would this break the wheel sensor which is inside the hub ??
