Question Muffler, replacement size?

I know this is a newbie question but I got to ask... need to replace my muffler, the stock one is HUGE and a stock replacement is about $120. Do I have to have a muffler this size? Or just one that has the proper size inlet and outlet? I can get a cheap generic one for less then have that. I have to replace a part of the exhaust pipe anyway so whatever length I might lose with a smaller muffler wont be a big deal to make up. Thanks in advance for any help.
