Down N' Dirty: Colorado ZR2 is the Ultimate Off-Roader (Video)

To prove that Chevy’s mid-size pickups are better at off-roading on tight trails, the Bow Tie took the Colorado to Indiana’s Badlands Off-Road Park.

Automakers, especially in more recent times, have been going after the niche segment of creating bespoke off-roading pickup trucks. But as far as going off-roading is concerned, pickup trucks are fundamentally poor vehicles and it comes down to their size. Pickup trucks are too big to make it through tight, complex trails, but in the second video from Chevrolet on the Colorado ZR2, the automaker shows that the mid-size pickup is perfectly sized for any kind of off-roading.

Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

To prove its point, Chevrolet took the Colorado ZR2 to the Badlands Off-Road Park in Indiana, which has a tight, technical off-roading trail. Now, this may not have been a smart move, as poking a bear usually ends in a mauling, but Chevrolet put its sights on comparing the Colorado ZR2 to the Ford F-150 Raptor. The automaker, when climbing up a steep hill, points out that the Colorado ZR2 is two feet narrower than a full-size truck, specifically that the Chevy measures 74.3 inches wide, while the Raptor is 98.6 inches wide.

Chevrolet reveals that the Colorado ZR2 is eight inches shorter than Ford’s popular Raptor — 212.7 inches to Raptor’s 220 inches.

The comparisons to the Raptor don’t stop there, though, as Chevrolet also reveals that the Colorado ZR2 is eight inches shorter than the popular Ford truck — 212.7 inches to the Raptor’s 220 inches. And without naming a competitor, Chevrolet also claims that the pickup is 1,000 lbs. lighter than a full-size off-road truck. So the Colorado ZR2 is shorter in both length and width than other off-roading trucks and is lighter too.

With its small footprint in mind, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see the Colorado ZR2 dominate on the narrow trail. Seriously, this thing looks like a muscular running back hitting a small gap on the football field before diving through a body of water and into the end zone. Go Colorado ZR2, go!
