Has Chevy Jumped The Shark With the All Electric Blazer SS?

Chevy has announced a new Blazer SS, and it’s unlike any Super Sport that has come before it.

When we think of a SS Chevy, we think of a big V8. Nova SS, Camaro SS, Chevelle SS. You don’t typically think of an EV. But just this week Chevrolet announced the Blazer SS. It’ll be all electric. And it will be the first EV to don an SS badge. Quite a leap of faith for GM.

To play devils advocate, we actually think GM may get this one right. The Hummer is available with 1000 horsepower. And the Silverado EV had 660. Those number both eclipse anything that has ever been given the Super Sport treatment. We don’t know if the drivetrain of the Blazer SS will be plucked from either one of those vehicles, but we’re guessing it’s going to be powerful. At least we’d hope GM wouldn’t try and redefine what SS means.

But if we look back in history, Chevy hasn’t always hit the mark with their SS cars either. The Malibu MAXX SS springs to mind, as does the 2004-2009 Impala SS. And we can’t forget the 2.4 liter Cobalt SS, which at 170 horsepower is the lowest powered car to ever get an SS badge. So, purists can at least breathe a sign of relief that the Blazer SS will at least out pace a few previous SS cars from GM.

Has Chevy Jumped The Shark With the All Electric Blazer SS?

We understand that electrification is imminent, but did GM jump the shark by going with a Blazer SS? Or, did they see what was happening at the other side of Detroit and want to compete with the Mustang Mach-E? That second theory would make the most sense. The Blazer SS will be a crossover of some sort, and slot right into the same segment as the Mustang. Sure, the Blazer name was on a boxy off-roader, and it would be on a CUV. But the Mustang Mach-E has the same scenario of a popular name being used on something it very definitely isn’t.

GM hasn’t released any information on the Blazer SS yet, other than the fact it will exist. So for now, we can speculate. We’ll check back in to see if we missed the mark.
