Life-size LEGO Batmobile Cruises into Detroit Auto Show

The Batmobile sits atop the list of the most iconic and well-known movie cars of all time. It’s lived on in many different iterations through many different Batman movies and TV shows, each a little different than the next. But the new LEGO Batmobile, built by Chevrolet, might be the most unique Batmobile yet.

Chevy debuted the new 17 foot long LEGO Batmobile at the North American International Auto Show. The impressive build is inspired by Batman’s Speedwagon, featured in the upcoming The LEGO Batman Movie. The latest LEGO film hits theaters in the U.S. on February 10.

Unlike the more recent, darker Batman films, the LEGO version comes across as a fun and lighthearted adventure. As usual, our hero still needs to save the city of Gotham from The Joker. But this time the lone wolf must do so with the help of others.

According to Paul Edwards, U.S. Vice President of Chevrolet Marketing, Chevy saw a great opportunity with the project. “To work on the LEGO Batmobile with Warner Bros. is an absolute thrill for us at Chevy,” says Edwards.

“Many of the themes in The LEGO Batman Movie, like imagination, family and community, align perfectly with our Chevy brand values and add to the value of the partnership.”

The LEGO Batmobile isn’t just a show piece sure to please every kid (and grownup kid), either. Batman’s latest ride will also appear in a new Chevrolet “Real People, Not Actors” spot. The ad will star several LEGO figurines discussing the type of person who might drive Batman’s new ride. This probably includes any fun-loving adult, Batman fan or not.

And since you’re probably wondering, it took a grand total of 344,187 LEGO bricks and 1,833 hours to construct the new Batmobile. And we’d bet the folks lucky enough to work on the project loved every minute of it.
