Chevy Silverado & GMC Sierra Moving Further Apart From Shared Identity

GM Truck

After years of pleading from enthusiasts the popular GM trucks have more differences than ever before. Can you spot them all?

The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra are a pair of GM trucks that are basically twins. And like human twins these trucks are getting to look less alike as they age. The folks over at GM Authority recently pointed out this growing difference between brands. And it is tough to argue otherwise. For years these two trucks were almost identical. If you were in the driver’s seat and put your hand over the emblem on the steering wheel, it would be tough for you to tell them apart. So why would someone pick a GMC over the Chevy, or vice versa? Good question. It basically came down to brand loyalty. You were either a Chevy person or a GMC person and that is what you stuck with. But when it came to the actual truck itself, it really didn’t matter.

Enthusiasts of the brands didn’t really love this. Sharing parts is fine, and it makes sense, but if you love Chevy you want to be able to point to your Silverado and say I like this, this, and this over the Sierra. The GMC fans want to do the same. And now with the 2022 refresh of the popular GM trucks it is easier than ever to point out those differences. The differences now go far beyond just the shape of the grille or the headlights. There are some real tangible differences now. A regular cab, standard box Sierra costs a couple hundred bucks more than the Silverado, but besides price what else is different?

Exterior Styling

Sierra

Step back to 1985 and look at a Sierra and Silverado from the front. Grille design is a bit different. But the headlights, bumper, front fenders look exactly the same. Look at the trucks today. The grille is still different but so are the headlights, the front bumper, the hood, and so on. They are related for sure, but now look more like regular siblings instead of twins. Out back it is a similar story with a different tailgate design along with taillight design. The exterior styling is difference enough that someone could have a strong preference for one over the other.

Interior Styling

Chevy Interior

This is where the GM trucks are even more distinct. They still clearly come from the same family but the design of the dash, the vents, and some controls are different. The center console design is different as well. The interior of each truck took massive steps forward with the 2022 refresh and GM took that opportunity to make them a little more distinct as well.

Colors and Trim

GM Truck

The two trucks offer distinct colors on each. The trims levels and how they are packaged also differs between the GM trucks. The Sierra offers eight trim levels, and the Silverado offers nine. But the Silverado tops out with the Limited High Country. A beautiful truck as it should be to go along with the $60,000 and up price tag. But the Sierra you can get in Denali Ultimate trim. It will set you back over $80,000 but it is like a Range Rover with a pickup bed. If you want the truck with the highest level of luxury, then you are going to want the Sierra.

Decision Time

Silverado

So, are you a Silverado person or a Sierra person? Have the recent updates swayed your decision at all? Do you want them to be more distinct, or stay closer together? Or do you not care as long as GM keeps cranking out great trucks? Let us know in the Chevrolet Forum forums.
