Chip Foose is Up to Something with an Unbuilt 1935 Cadillac Concept
Only a few weeks removed from celebrating 30 years of design at the Los Angeles Petersen Automotive Museum, Chip Foose announced his next major custom project, a 1939 Cadillac Madam X Coupe.
The car’s roots come from an old, forgotten concept sketch. Automotive megaman Wes Rydell and his wife Vivian commissioned a car from General Motors designer Art Ross about 80 years ago. Ross used a ’30s Cadillac 60 Special sedan as the base and shortened it, lowered it, and turned it into a hard-top coupe. It’s a design that sounds exactly like something Foose would have cooked up. Unfortunately, the project was never finished.

Now, Foose is taking that sketch and bringing it to life with his own touch. The name Madam X is a call back to another General Motors designer Harley Earl, who used to call one-off special client projects the same name.
“The Madam X Cadillac is turning out to be one of the most stylish cars I’ve ever built,” said Chip. “It’s a great combination of modern technology and old-school coachbuilding tradition. I can’t wait to reveal it.”
The photos below show that it’s already been well in the works, and the team expects to finish it before the year’s end.
