Chevy Obsession of the Week: Custom Silverado: The ’80s Lead Sled

Square-body truck combines ’50s cool with a stunning ’80s time capsule!

Fans of the old school hot rod scene from the ’50s and ’60s undoubtedly know what a lead sled is. Generally, it refers to vehicles with heavily modified bodies. Typically, this meant chopping and channeling the body, frenching the lights, and otherwise shaping the body to obtain a certain look. And while this unique 1987 Chevy Silverado carries none of those bodywork traits, it looks an awful lot like a modern day lead sled.

We spotted the interesting build over at The Collector Car Network, where it stood out simply because we’ve never seen anything like it. Clearly, the previous owner has a fascination with ’50s hot rods. Just take a look at that unique bed cover, fender skirts, spot lights, and white walls for proof of that. Other unique period touches include Rally wheels, Owens Classic “Night Lightnin” Running Boards, and boatloads of chrome. Heck, the taillights even hold blue dots, a true hot rod touch!

Perhaps most incredibly, this retro Chevy Silverado shows only 19,500 original miles on the odometer. The original two-tone blue paint is in stunning condition, as is the interior. Save for the aforementioned modifications, this is one amazing time capsule of a truck. And since everything is bolt-on, that stuff can be removed if so desired.

The super clean engine bay and scratch-free bed are further proof that this Chevy Silverado was somebody’s baby. Even the undercarriage looks like new, despite the fact that the truck currently resides in Michigan. Clearly, it’s never seen a salty winter road, or even too many rainy days. And we’re thankful for that. Because today, it’s reminded us why we love ’80s square body Chevys in the first place. Not to mention hot rods and lead sleds!
