Helpful Tip for Changing a Chevy 350 Water Pump

Swapping out a leaky water pump is not exactly what most folks would call a fun, but it’s a necessary evil for incontinent trucks. Bundy’s Garage has a pretty clever tip here for keeping the gaskets where they should be for all the DIY’ers out there that would prefer to just change the damn thing instead of paying someone else.

Gaskets tend to be difficult to seat because of the way they sit on the water pump’s flanges. They have nothing to attach to, so typically, folks hang the gaskets on a bolt before installing the pump assembly. They’ll still move around and it’ll take a little extra effort to get them to sit in place. Bundy’s garage gets around that by using spray adhesive to make the gaskets stick to the pump before installing. It’s worth noting that the gaskets are sticking to the pump and not the block. If they leak again in the future, you won’t have to worry about scraping them off and marring the engine surface in any way.

It’s a no-brainer kind of trick that applies to more situations than this one. It just makes an already tedious process less fiddly which is a win in my book. Bundy is working on an earlier model Silverado, but the process is similar even though the parts are different. You can read more about swapping water pumps on Chevy trucks in our How-To section here.
