Red ’69 Camaro Torches the Competition in Northern California
Neither lack of competition or small wheels would stop this fire-breathing Camaro from putting on an amazing show of power.
Every weekend at your local drag strip, there’s at least a handful of Camaros ready to throwdown against all challengers (Dodge or otherwise). No matter the generation, no matter if it’s straight off the street or purpose-built, Chevy’s answer to the Mustang kills it every time, one quarter-mile at a time.
Fred White, one of the hosts of YouTube channel 1320video, witnessed one particularly amazing 1969 Camaro at the second round of Team Boddie Racing’s “No Excuses” street outlaw drag series, held at Sacramento Raceway Park in Sacramento, California.
“It’s got a Pat Musi nitrous motor in it with an M&M two-speed tranny in it, and it’s running 275 drag radials,” said owner and driver Roger Holder. “We’re gonna run on Small Tire, but where wasn’t enough cars for us to run, so we just thought we’d could go over and play with the Big Tire guys. We’ll see what happens. I don’t know how well we’ll do, but we’ll try.”
On the first test-and-tune run the night before, the ’69 Camaro lit up the track with nitrous-fueled flames shooting from the sides, leaving the yellow fourth-gen Camaro in the dust. But how would it do when it came time for the big show?
Against the Pontiac GTO in the right lane, all looked like it was over too soon. And it was. For the GTO, because it left too soon, tripping the red light off the line. Thus, Holder’s Camaro cruises to the finish, ready to tackle the second round.
Back against the yellow Camaro from the first test-and-tune, the red ’69 monster takes the win by a mile, throwing up flames from the side pipes and the cowl. As the track announcer says, “That’s a heck of a tune up!”
With the stars coming out to play in the night above, Holder went up against Kye Kelly in his black 1984 Camaro. The flames from the red Camaro added to the fireworks down the strip, but it was Kelly who took the win by a car length.
“I don’t know if you guys understand how awesome that car is,” said White. “Roger Holder just– his front bumper was on Kye’s back bumper. Kye is a 959 cubic-inch, four or five stages of nitrous, big motor. [Holder] has a nitrous motor as well, but tiny little tires… He did pretty well if you ask me.”
