U.K. Backup Lights Spark Confusing Situation for Chevrolet Forum Member

Forum usage is an essential part of keeping vehicles on the road across the globe.

We’ve all been there. We bought a truck and something needed fixing. The temperature gauge was out, the diff was locked-up, or maybe even the gas tank had rusted through and you’re spilling out onto the concrete on your first fill-up. Whatever it was, you took to the forums to seek some much-needed advice on how best to deal with the situation. Thank God for the Internet.

One particular forum user on Chevrolet Forum, Hillhopper, located in Lancashire, Great Britain, found himself in this exact position. He was the proud new owner of a Chevrolet K1500 extended cab pickup truck, but it came complete with a wiring situation that needed amending to accommodate for his intended modification. Not too many Brits drive around in a K1500, so information was sparse. Luckily though, the good ol’ boys here in the States were able to get him on the right track in the forums of Chevrolet Forum.

Hillhopper started off his thread with a simple and direct explanation of his predicament.

“Hi, I’m in the U.K. where I bought the truck and previous owner has used reverse lights as orange indicators, probably to comply with U.K. regs. I am trying to wire in a worklight on the rear to use as reverse light and have found a terminated light green wire in the rear lamp cluster, just wondered if that is the reverse light feed. If not, does anyone know which wire to splice into? Thanks.”

A tricky situation indeed for those unfamiliar with wiring, but Hillhopper had an answer in no less than an hour.

A veteran contributor of the forum by the name of Burnhedge chimed in with the saving advice. He revealed that the light green wires have in fact been used for backups, also adding that using a test light or multimeter when thrown into reverse would aid the process.

Several days later Hillhopper came back with the great news that he now had a functioning backup light.

Forums for the win. The Internet was created for just such a thing. With the wealth of information in our collective skulls we could solve all the world’s problems… Or at the very least it’s automotive ones.
