Will We See a Diesel Half-Ton Silverado?

If you’ve looked at fuel prices lately, you’ve probably noticed an interesting trend. Diesel fuel, once significantly more expensive than gasoline in many parts of the country, is now less expensive than petrol. Not only that, but manufacturers are offering more diesel engines than ever. There is a diesel soon to be available for the Colorado, and there is one available in the HD trucks. But what about the half-ton, will it see one?

It would seem to make sense for Chevrolet to offer a diesel in the standard Silverado. Ram currently offers their 3.0L EcoDiesel in their Ram 1500. Nissan is offering a Cummins 5.0L V8 diesel in the upcoming Titan XD model. There is precedent to offer a diesel in a half-ton pickup truck.

Also, let’s not forget that they are putting a diesel in the Colorado. If the General is willing to spend the time and money into diesel power for their smallest pickup, it’d seem like a no-brainer for use in the half-ton.

The only thing that could potentially be holding them back is improved fuel economy. The V8s that Chevrolet currently uses are pretty fuel efficient.

Ram sells every single EcoDiesel pickup truck they build. While it’s too early to tell with Nissan, having the Cummins name gives them some credibility. We think it’s time for a half-ton diesel from Chevrolet.
