Z71 Silverado Gets a 9″ Lift: Awesome or Awful?

By -

Latest phase of ‘Project Torque’ is as badass as ever, but it creates mixed reactions.

So you’re finally doing well enough for yourself that you want to buy and build your dream truck. You’re so excited about it that you get shirts printed up, and you want to fully-document the build on YouTube. Great! But entering into this public forum, you’re putting yourself at risk for being critiqued on every move you make – or worse. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s check in on Project Torque.

Project Torque is YouTube user Freddylsx’s Z71 Silverado. It’s a good-looking truck: black on black wheels and a dark window tint. And the proud owner is hard at work making the truck his. Only thing is, it looks like the end result will make it more of a street truck than a workhorse.

Not long into the video, someone points out that the truck has a little scratch on the door. Freddylsx is not pleased. Then he gets into a discussion with his cameraman about driving through water. When the cameraman says that he takes his truck through water, Freddylsx replies “yeah, but you don’t care about your truck.” Just so you know where he stands, when his friend asks him if he’s ever going to take his truck off road, he says “Probably one time…”

So, yeah, this is a street build. And in the first five minutes of this video, there’s a whole lot of standing around talking with very little action. But once the truck is torn into, things get interesting. It gets a 9″ lift, a job that can take anywhere from 10 to 12 hours on a 4×4 Silverado. Seeing these guys working together to do the job is pretty cool to watch. We just wish the video focused a little more on the build.

Finally, after tearing into the suspension, mounting the new 37″ tires on the rims, and putting it all together, this latest phase of Project Torque is complete. “Look at the stance right here!” Freddylsx says. He’s clearly one proud papa, and really that’s all that matters. But how does the YouTube commentariat feel about the build? Well, the results are mixed.

There are some detractors amid the mostly positive comments. Dirt Shaker says, “Looks good but why do people put 37’s and up on 1/2 ton pickups?! They struggle!! That big of a set up belongs on a diesel!!” Gmony907 adds: “I like those z71 stock rims,” and Kevin Perez savagely says: “Looks cool but it’s just another mall-crawler.”

There will forever be a debate between trucks as workhorses and trucks as customized rides for the street. We’re not going to weigh in on that here. We just love to see a bunch of guys who love their Chevy trucks. And we can’t wait to see where Project Torque goes next.
