1998 c3500 tach/speedometer issues.
Hey there. Just picked up a 98 3500 7.4 and the tachometer and speedometer don't work. The abs light is also on. No check engine codes.
The guages are definitely getting power. The rpm guages jumps to 6k and the speedo moves erratically.
I can see RPM as well as speed in my scanner but the guages themselves don't work.
Where do I go from here? I've read elsewhere that the ignition switch could cause this, have one ordered. Anything else I should look for?
Thanks

The clusters in these trucks are known for multiple issues - worn stepper motors being one of them.
Remove the clear cover lens from the cluster (should be able to do without completely removing the cluster from the dash). Manually sweep the tach and speedo needles with the tip of your finger - they should move freely and smoothly and return to the at-rest position once released.
If they feel like something is grabbing or skipping or don’t return to the at-rest position, the stepper motors need replacement. Dorman makes repair kits if you’re comfortable with soldering, or there’s several repair services available online.
