Default 95 Sierra 4x4 4l60e compatibility

Recently bought a '95 GMC Sierra 4x4 with transmission issues. Found out it had a '97 4060E and it will not communicate with the factory PCM. Learned enough to know that 95 4l60e's are kinda specific to that one year. Haven't been able to find a salvaged 95 4060e for less than a thousand bucks. I'm looking for a cheaper option. My thoughts. I've never really messed with one but don't slap shifters come with a stand-alone TCM? Would that work to essentially bypass the factory PCM so your shifts communicate with the transmission directly? Would it be better to rebuild that transmission with a couple parts to make it compatible? What all would that take? any advice on the subject just to get this truck on the road as cheap as possible would be great.
