02 Silverado ticking sound/antifreeze smell
Hi everyone.
I have two symptoms that may or may not be related I'm having trouble diagnosing.
The truck is an 02 Silverado 2500HD. 8.1l 6speed 4wheel drive.107000 miles
From idle up to power under load I get what sounds like the classic exhaust donut ticking sound. I've crawled under when the engine is idling and can't hear it. When sitting still and just revving the engine the sound is not there.
Also, when cold I get a strong smell of antifreeze. The level in the purge tank does in fact decrease and I have to add to it periodically. There is no smoke/vapor, there are no leaks to the ground and I can't see it on anything. Smells like it's coming from all over, not just one side or the other. When the engine warms up the smell goes away.
Other than that the truck runs like a champ and I routinely drive it on extended trips. The gas mileage sucks(around 11) but I couldn't ask for a better rig. Any ideas? Thanks everyone.

my 02 would smell like antifreeze, most times you could only smell it with the heat on. the only thing i could think of was the heater core was leaking. wouldnt need too much antifreeze to keep the engine cold but if you wanted heat i would have to add some every month
