Best approach to troubleshoot?

Having a problem with what I believe is the Steering Lock, it is difficult to turn/unlock the steering wheel and turn the key.
Maybe I am having an issue with the Ignition Switch and need to replace it.
I know the ignition switch has 2 buttons/probes on the back side of the bezel. What is the purpose of these?
How is the Ignition Switch related to the Steering Lock or is it?
Is there any posts you could recommend describing the mechanics of the Steering Lock? How it engages/disengages? Spring Loaded?
