97 Ignition Cylinder Replacement
Recently my key would not fit into the ignition lock, I had a locksmith look at it and explained to me that the tumblers are completely busted and it would be cheaper to just replace the lock cylinder. However I cannot seem to figure out how to get into the steering column to press the release pin to finish the project. Any help would be much appreciated.
Welcome to the forum.
If you cannot turn the lock cylinder to RUN, you'll have to drill a hole into the ignition switch proper. Ask the locksmith if he can do it in a way that doesn't require a new ignition switch as well.

It sounds like you haven't taken anything apart yet but just drilled along the keyhole. Somehow I assumed the ignition switch was on the dash but it's actually on the steering column on yours? If so, I don't know if there's a short cut that doesn't require dismantling the steering column.
Correct, yes the ignition is on the column. Okay, how do i go about dismantling The steering column? I know that I have to remove the steering wheel and have done that before. but the rest i need an overview for.
Unfortunately I don't have that information handy. I vaguely remember that it was a pain to work on them in the bad old days. I suppose barrel designs were better than clam shells in terms of theft deterrence. Maybe you should consider an online subscription to ALLDATAdiy.com or eautorepair.net.
