Default 2004 Silverado z71 shift cable

So the clip on the transmission end of the shift cable finally broke. From what I can find there are 2 different cables (131” and 140”). However they both list the same applications, is the only way to be able to tell is to pull the old one first? Or am I missing something?

The difference is 4x4 or RWD. You need the 140” cable.

Ok thanks, now my next apparent issue is the retaining clip that locks the cable into the bracket on the transmission end. Horseshoe clip? Any ideas on the correct name or where one can be sourced?

Not sure on a source - they’re probably discontinued through GM, but at the very least a dealer could probably give you a part number to reference when searching.

That said, more than once I’ve secured them with a heavy duty zip tie (1/4” wide and about 3/32” thick) without problems. Just route it through the “wings” like the original clip did - the head of the zip tie serves the same purpose as the original clip. It will at least get you by until you can find a replacement.

Yea, looks like that would be the only real option....right now I have the old one secured in place with a hose clamp, as the parts store only had the 131” in stock. Don’t guess it’s possible to only replace the outer portion of the cable?
