Are you talking about the backlighting on the instrument cluster or the backlighting on various control switches ie, heater/ac control, 4X4 switch, cargo/fog light switch?

I am new to this forum so I am not sure of the mechanics of how it works but I will try and attach three documents that should help. These are for my 1999 Silverado but still should be applicable to your truck. Looking at the drawings I would check fuse #14 (10A) in the LBEC located at the end of your dash, driver side. Remove the panel and look for fuse labeled "ILLUM" fuse #14. Another possibility but not probable is the bulbs in the instrument cluster are all burned out. There should six incandescent bulbs in the instrument cluster for backlighting. Maybe they all burned out at once but I doubt it. Also the connector on the instrument cluster are known to cause problems. Could be a bad connection there. See attached schematics. Hope this helps.
