oil in the combustion chamber can come from a few places ...

blown head gasket
valve guide
piston rings

Since you're having a misfires, my money is on the gasket. Do a compression test.

possibly head gasket blew right out and pistons hydro-locked. White smoke was probably coolant (steam). Oil smoke tends to be more blue.

You might be able to save the engine with a top end rebuild. $200 for gasket kit. $200+ for surface machining.

True but he has got to make sure the engine oil has no coolant in it else his bearings are toast.

Oh well. It's a 17 yr old vehicle. Possibly high mileage. If I wasn't particularly attached to the engine, I would just flush it really well and then drive it until it quit.
