Default Recommended maximum RPM when towing

Hello again Silverado owners,

I am having my 2003 Silverado LS 1500 transmission overhauled and beefed up in January to ensure that my hauling a 21.5 Nash fifth wheel won't overburden it. The transmission will be "heavy duty" in terms of the replacement parts and upgrades. However, the 4.8 liter engine is stock (albeit, low mileage). My question is what is the recommended maximum RPMs when towing? I will be taking the truck and trailer across country next fall and I anticipate some steep grades. In the past, when climbing steep grades, my truck slows to between 45 and 50 MPH before kicking into second gear. This causes the RPMs to raise to 3,400 and 3,800, causing me to worry about overstressing the engine. I will not be in a hurry when travelling but don't want to be "that guy" who causes a major traffic slowdown because of my reduced speed. What is a safe RPM that I can go when climbing steep grades? I appreciate any recommendations that I can get.

as long as the engine is warm, its fine anywhere below redline. Just check oil and every refuel and high rpm running will cause more oil consumption. towing is severe service so follow a severe service maintenance interval.

the only issue i am concerned with when towing is: am I towing more than what the vehicle is built for. Always better to have more truck than what you need. I upgraded to a 2500 and it doesn't even work hard. The suspension and brakes are much more capable.
