My Silverado has 170,000 miles on it. I'm embarrassed to admit I have never changed the transmission fluid. Should I do it now? flush or no flush? Change filter or not? Some places just want to go down the dipstick tube and flush it out. I think at minimum change the filter and replace the fluid lost from doing that.

Yes you should. If you don't change the filter, it will plug up you can kiss the transmission goodbye.

 

I'm for pan drop and filter.

 

If I were you, I'd drop it now and then at 20,000 miles, to get all the contaminates out. After that every 50,000 miles.

 

Do a basic drop the pan,filter & fluid change. A full flush will probably kill your tranny sooner than later. Ask me how I know!

 

I agree. I've heard nothing but horror stories about full flushing an automatic transmission.

 

I'll bite. How do you know?

 

Had it done to our 93 Sub at about 200k; tranny dead 2 months later. Coincidence? Had done two fluid/filters over the life of the transmission. Granted, 200k is alot, but makes you wonder.

 

Was it showing any symptoms before you changed the fluid? Slip, poor shifting etc..

 

Nope, just got talked in to the flush when I went in for a fluid change I knew was overdue and too lazy to do myself
