Silverado Check Engine Light
Just got back from having my vent solenoid replaced, light has been on for a week, thought after two fill ups the gas cap sensor might reset itself as this is what happened about a year and half ago, got a 2009 Silverado. Anyway Code P0449 is listed on the repair sheet, was there about 2 hours and it cost $390.72, they replaced solenoid, 5/8x 25ft and a clamp. Happy the light has gone off, hoping it stays off, but good to know that I am not emitting carbons into the atmosphere! I love my Silverado and it hauls a 2 horse bumper pull with my horse very well !!
This is the second Silverado I have had. Now on 67272 miles, previous one went to nearly 300k if I remember rightly. The air died and being in FL much needed, so got a great deal on the 2009 model May 2010.

Magsashworth,
Thank you for your feedback! Great to hear you were able to get your Silverado fixed!
Ron Bacon,
It is difficult to say. The Check Engine light can come on for multiple reasons. Have you noticed any problems? I would suggest you take the vehicle in for an inspection. A certified technician will be able to offer a more accurate diagnosis with a physical inspection.
If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact me.

I took my truck to the dealer for an oil change and they checked the computer due to I had a engine symble on. They said the fuel vent solenoid was bad and that it needed to be replaced. I asked if it would hurt to run it like it is and they said no but I may lose 1-2 mpg. The dealer wanted over 500.00 to replace it. I asked the mechanic if an ave person could do this and he said yes. He suggested to buy the kit and not replace the bad one, but relocate the solenoid in a different location and I would never have to worry about the light coming back on. The part would be about 160 - 180 dollars. Has anyone replaced / relocated one of these? Where is it and where do you relocate it to.
Thanks,
Thanks,
I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3L. I had CEL on which gave errors for faulty knock sensor. I went ahead and replaced both knock sensors, did a tune up, oil change, and fuel filter. When I got my truck back from the mechanic not even 24 hours later the CEL was back on. I had it scanned and it returned a code regarding a faulty purge solenoid. Before I got my knock sensors replaced I would get a message saying Tighten Fuel Cap. I would also get a small evap leak code as well. As I said, I replaced the knock sensors and replaced the gas cap now I have that purge solenoid code. I was driving to work and the CEL started flashing and it kept acting like it was misfiring. I do not know what to do? Is it even safe to drive?
How difficult is it to replace? I know that the part costs under 40 bucks but how much would it run to have it put in? Also, where is the part located on the vehicle? Is it possible to have "injured" it in process of changing fuel filter or the knock sensors from the big repair I had done less than a week ago?

I have to put my two cents in here - I have an 06 Chevy Silverado that has this mystery check engine light issue also. Mine comes on and then goes off for about two or three weeks and then comes back on again. I have had it fixed more times than I can remember. And of course it ALWAYS comes on when it is time for the inspection... I am really just so tired of this. I love my truck and Chevy but this is about to wear me out. I have had the gas cap replaced, the solenoid replaced and even had the emissions system repaired under warranty a few years back. I bought this truck with 6 miles on it. I have had more problems with it from the headliner not being cut properly to the rear window leaking like a faucet to this irritating check engine light thing. Does seem like it should not keep happening like it does. Now I am about to put it in the shop once again.
It seems from reading these posts that I am not the only one and I am sure that I will buy Chevy again - or am I?

Thanks for your detailed reply UKRKOZ. I hope you can give me some advice with my problem. I have a problem with my 2002 Silverado 5.3L with 63,000 miles on it. I have that popular P0440 evap code keep poping up. Changed out the gas cap but that didnt work so I went Off to the dealer. The dealer smoked the system and found the fuel tank hose and vent were broken or cracked. The Dealers cost for this repair was $1450
which was really a total replacement of the fuel tank. I was a little shocked to say the least. Can you or anyone in the knowtell me if there is another option that doesnt break the bank? I am also a little confused as to how it was broken to start with. I dont go 4 wheeling or drive the truck hard and take what I think of as good care of it.. Any thoughts or option I would be appriciated. Not really into spending this kind of money for something like this and whats to keep it from reoccuring? Thanks for any help you can provide.

When you said "vent" what exactly did you mean. The little fuel vent valve that is at the end of the tank? And are you talking about the filler hose that allows you to fill up the tank with gas? You could prolly find a junkyard and get the parts or the whole thing yourself. Dropping the tank isn't too hard unless your doing it with a full tank
