Stuck in 4Hi

Default Stuck in 4Hi

My 2000 Silverado LS 4.8 4WD is stuck in 4Hi. Tried cleaning connections, driving in reverse and going to neutral - no joy. I've attached a short video to see and hear what's occurring, sounds like it's trying to shift, but it's not.

Default Stuck in 4Hi

I own a l200 2004 and think I have some problems with the vacum pipes, since this didn't fix my problem.

Default This isn't a long term fix but has saved me a couple times

On a couple of long road trips to the Yukon River bridge and back to Fairbanks my 99 Silverado got stuck in 4HI about halfway and there were no gas stations along the way and the store MIGHT be open if we made it there at all. I knew with the load of 4 passengers (+their gear) and two snow mobile's on a trailer that we wouldn't make it all the way in 4HI unless one of two things happened, we found gas by some miracle OR I figured out how to get it back into 2WD with no tools and literally in the middle of nowhere. I didn't find the idea of waiting for a miracle very appealing so I popped the cover off the fuse box under the hood and looked for the 20A ATC fuse (Automatic Transfer Case) and pulled it. It was fine. But I heard something click from below when I did. Worried, I quickly replaced it and fired up the truck to see if I made it worse. Lo and behold it reset the system and I could select 2WD again! Yay! Luckily we made it there and back without any further problems. I did hit the 4HI button in town when i got back and it did the same thing. Didn't have enough time to do a meaningful analysis because I had to go back to pick em up in 48 hours and I had things to tend anyway. So I repeated the fuse thing and it worked again. I did notice that I could get it to go back and forth if I didn't leave it in 4HI for very long (like around 45 seconds). If I did I'd have to stop, pop the hood and pull the fuse all over again. I did find the problem was with my actuator on the front axle, for some unknown reason the arm that shoots out to depress the spring that engages the front differential was too short. Yes, weird. I know. Anyway I didn't have much money or time for the BS involved to get it replaced so I got a short piece of steel of the same diameter and cut it to length and put it in front of the actuator arm and then screwed the actuator all the way in and its been working for years now. I check it a few times a year and it seems to be fine so I leave it there and I scratch my head for a day or so and forget about it until my maintenance checks are due again. Hope it helps you in some way.
