My 2004 Silverado with the 4.8 engine now has 127k of "normal" driving. The auto transmission shifts like it did when I left the showroom. I changed the trans fluid (only that in the pan) at 60K and am now debating a trans oil & filter change, along with scheduled fluid changes at subsequent 3K intervals thereafter, to totally replace all the old fluid after 4 changes. A local shop trans repair shop advises against it, saying it may lead to problems.. (They may have an ulterior motive.)
Has anyone here experienced a problem after such an action? To be clear, I am dead-set against a flush so will not entertain that idea.

old flush machines are bad but the new fluid exchange machines don't cause problems as they don't reverse flow and pulse. they use the trans pump to flow fluid out in the normal flow direction.
problems arise for people when they flush fluid from an old worn out trans. the debris in the clutch packs are keeping the clutches from slipping...when you exchange the fluid and remove the debris...the trans start to slip. pressure pulsing flush machines can stir up crud and clog the valve body.
if i had a trans that had no issues...ie dtc, burned fluid...i would have no concerns with an "exchange machine".
what you want to do is fine..1 filter change and 4 pan drops.
the oem pan gasket is reusable and much better than aftermarket gaskets. if its not leaking..pressure-wash it off and re-use it. if an aftermarket gasket is there...replace it.
the filter seal...replace it. beginners find it a pita to remove but good techs replace it every time. the old seal is mated to the old filter neck. the old seal may deform when the filter is removed.

MountainmanJoe, my idea is to suck out the 4 quarts or so 3K after the first pan drop and add a like amount three times in succession.
