Default Oil consumption issue

Hey everyone. Sorry if this has been discussed but I did a search here and couldn’t find anything. I have a 2008 Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L flex fuel AFM with 144xxx miles. I purchased it with 138xxx miles. So far I’ve had to add 3qts or so extra oil which seems excessive. So I did some digging and I have found the bulletin that that deals with this issue. I am planning on changing the drivers side valve cover with GM 12570427 since it’s due for its oil change and that would be the perfect time. Has anyone here also performed this procedure to see if their oil consumption improves? If so, did it help?

I also read in the bulletin that the plugs can get fouled from the oil (along with other carbon buildup). I plan on just replacing the plugs with ACDelco 41-162 iridium. I mean? why pull plugs to check for fouls and put them back in or worse need a set and not have it? But should I also replace the wires? If so, should I use OEM ACDelco 748RR replacement, or will the professional set 9748RR work? There’s about $30 difference in price so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also If I plan on deleting the AFM system to eliminate the problem entirely, what is a good brand of OBDII tool to do so? I don’t have money for a tuner let alone a tune to do it. Thanks for any insights you can give!
