Default 2020 silverado ltz 1500 3.0 diesel real main seal failure

hello i purchased a 2020 silverado 1500 ltz 3.0 diesel 3 months ago it has 5100 miles. drove up to my mother in law's house 80 miles away and drove back home that night. got home and went to go to the store and got in the truck and headed down the road when the check engine light came on and the truck went into low power mode. Got back home and checked the app and had an alert to service the engine and transmission system in the next 7 days. popped the hood and checked the oil to find the dipstick dry. Next day the truck was towed to the local chevy dealer. they check it out and find the rear main seal failed , oil everywhere on the underside. The mechanic put 7 quarts of oil in the truck to fill it back up. 17 days later I got it back from the dealer. they replaced the rear seal and drove it and said everything else looks fine. My concern is what else was damaged in the engine running that far without oil. I am debating on how long to keep the truck now. I bought the diesel to last me a long time and I'm worried it took alot of life out of the engine. What else is going to happen down the road? Let me hear all your thoughts on this, not sure what to do next. Thanks for the replies.

as far as gm is concerned they fixed it. they won't do anything more unless you have future problems before powertrain warranty runs out. As for life expectancy or wear that occurred...its a guess. I would monitor for oil consumption and engine noises and have them addressed before warranty expires.

I have a 2020 Silverado 1500 3.0 diesel with 7500 miles on it. The exact same thing has happened to me. My truck is still in the shop waiting parts. My truck is currently in the shop waiting parts. Chevy told me they have never heard of this happening before. There may be bigger issues here.

Default 2020 high country 1500 3.0 diesel rear main seal

My 2020 had 4,800 miles the first time the rear main seal failed. I use my truck for work and I found all the oil from my truck on my customers driveway. It was towed to a local dealer (2 hours from my home) and I had to find a way home.

The truck was fixed and failed again before it left the dealership. They repaired it again and said everything was fixed properly.

The same failure occurred again at 6,535 miles. Again on a customers driveway. It has been at a dealership since 4/9/21 waiting on a parts.

I have cleaned two driveways and have been without my work truck for a total of 16 days as of today. I have called GM customer service twice and have asked to talk to a supervisor but am always denied.

It is a shame that we all have purchased a new vehicle without being able to rely on what we purchased. How reliable is an engine that has ran without oil three times?

Shame on GMC for not caring.

2020 Silverado RST 3.0L Duramax. Bought in October 2020. 12,500 miles. Rear Main seal blew out, oil everywhere. Seeing this is a common issue and GM has a bulletin out on it. Dealer says 12+ hour repair.

and thats why you buy it near the end of the production not the start. the first 3 years of any new vehicle from any company is filled with problems that need solving. the joke is the vehicle is driven of the production line right into a recall line. At least you have warranty.

dodge ecodiesel had bugs when it came out also.

Default Same problem 25000 kms.

Left me on the side of the road last evening. Waiting for shop to let me know what is going on. Safety mechanisms did warn me when oil got critically low and hopefully before damage done to engine. Not too impressed with roadside assistance. No answer on 1-800 number though On Star still works even though I am not subscribed to it. GM only use certain towing companies and took 3 hrs to get there from 1 1/2 hrs away. Granted they were already on a call but surely there was someone closer? Also cost me an extra $70 to have it towed to dealership I use instead of nearest one, difference in distance being maybe 15 kms. Second major problem with these vehicles. Couldnt fix instrument panel failure on 1st Duramax and after 10 weeks in shop gave me another truck instead. Should have learned my lesson and gone back to gas power. Previous Silverado had no problems for 100,000 Kms.
