I'm on my 3rd visit to the dealership they have me going every 500miles so they can check my oil and document it last time I was there I was low 1/2 a quart.

20 model yr 6.2, purchased in Dec of 21. With 47k miles, no issues

 

My Silverado 1500 6.2L is using way too much oil in my opinion. At around 38% I get the low engine oil message. When I check, the oil doesn't register on the dipstick. I have had it to the dealer several times and they have done the oil consumption test and at 5,000 miles it is down 2 quarts. They told me that this is normal and within Chevrolet's specs. I have 39,000 miles on the vehicle and this has happened only on the last two oil changes.
Can anyone shed some light on this issue? I want to believe the dealer as they have been very good to me in the past. However, having owned many, many new cars and trucks during my lifetime I have never heard of such a thing.

 

The dealer has it's hands tied. The factory spec for oil consumption is 1 Qt. in 2000 miles. Weather you or I agree with this is above our pay grade. If the engine is using less than this the factory won't pay for the repair. If it can be documented that it uses as much or more than the factory will pay the claim. It has to be documented for the factory. 2 qts in 5000 miles is 1 qt in 2500 miles and GM considers it normal consumption.

 

If the factory spec for oil consumption is 1 quart per 2000 miles, then if the oil consumption is 2 quarts per 5000 miles, or to state that another way, 1 quart per 2500 miles, then that oil consumption (1 quart ever 2500 miles) is OVER the factory oil consumption specification of 1 quart every 2000 miles (or to put it another way, 2 quarts every 4000 miles).

Hence that would be abnormal oil consumption.

 

Your looking at that backwards. If your using1 qt in 2500 miles. Your using LESS oil. Remember the spec is 1 qt in 2000 mi ( or in less milage, like using 1 qt in 1000 mi, would be excessive). Consumption of 1 qt in 2500 mi would be considered normal by the manufacturer because your going over 2000mi per quart. You have the math correct, just the interpretation turned around. You and I might not agree with this but those are the guide lines the manufacturer has set. If you and the Dealer can document that you drive LESS than 1000 miles and have used 1 or more qts. of oil the factory will assist. Remember it's not the Dealer your dealing with it's the O/E that makes the rules. Hope this helps you better understand the situation. Very best to you.

 

I reread my last post and it should be If you drive less than 2000 miles and have used 1 or more quarts of oil. That would be excessive consumption.
