Are there any panels or trim on the inside of the door that you can remove or open? I am not familiar with the 86 Astro, but on my friends 98, I was able to open up enough of the trim to open it.

No unfortunately you have to open the door to get to the screws to remove the panel

You might have to break the panel open.

can you take off the other panels on the inside? this might allow you access to the rear door panel or a couple screws to it at least. then you might have to gently pull it away from the door to manually operate the rod. one rod locks the other opens. think to open it you have to pull the rod down to lock you have to move the other rod upwards
