Default 97 Astro will not always shift out of park

Hello everyone, I have a 1997 Astro that will not always shift out of park. I think it is an electrical problem of some kind because when it acts up I can turn the steering wheel back and forth a few times and hit the brake and it will drop into gear. If there is a problem in the steering column I could sure use some help. Any ideas anyone? Thanks for any help.

could be a problem with the brake pedal switch? does the shifter lock up in the "park" position?

Thanks for the reply. The shifter locks in the park position. When it acts up, I can hit the brake pedal several times and it will not release and drop into gear, but if I move the steering wheel side to side then hit the brake it will go into gear.

does the steering wheel lock up also? if it frees up after wiggling it could be a loose harness or faulty shift lock solenoid?

The steering wheel locks up just fine. When I start it the steering wheel unlocks with no problem and I have never had any problems turning the key. Is it a big job to pull the steering wheel off to check the wiring? Thanks again for your help.

Thanks, I will get the wheel off and see if there is something wrong. I guess I should replace electrical components while I have thing apart.
