no no no... easy fix. i had the same issue. go to teh chevrolet dealership, ask for a part called the brake light switch. its located behind the brake pedal. and it controls the lights and such. and mine went bad and i tried every one they had in stock at the auto stores around me. none worked til i got the dealership one. believe me its a 20 dollar part but it fixed my issue too.

My 98 has been having issues with this, switch was replaced but only helped for a while, the wires move with the pedal and they eventually go bad, so you might also have to rewire the wireing harness going to the switch,

Any of you mechanics, can i just by pass the switch, it still has issues sometimes and i am affraid the next time it happens when dad is driving it he might rip the shifter of the collum lol ,
