Default gas cap gets hot

I need some help. Just put a new/used motor in My 91 camaro and I got it running only cant seem to get the timing right even though its timed at 0 and found out my gas cap get very hot. Never heard of this before any ideas? Thanks

Does the size of the distributor matter? The one that came with the motor is much bigger round than the one I put on

Sounds like it came with a HEI distributor and you put in a standard one. I believe your '91 would have come with a HEI distributor.

Ok so I put a 1984 305 in my 1991, I took all of the accessories alternator water pump ect. I also put my maifold and tbi and distributor which is a standard distributor but cant seem to keep it running

If it dies as soon as the key goes from Start to Run, then most likely a wiring problem. A standard distributor gets a full 12V during starting and a reduced voltage when running to reduce point wear.

If that's not what's happening, then might be lack of gas. Check fuel pressure w/ key on, engine off and during starting.

These cars were using computers back then, not as easy to swap different things around. I would check into that.
