I suppose it is better to read a lot of info before trying anything or go to specialist - will save time and money.

I personally think you should just put a used ls1 into it, and you'll end up not having to deal with a laundry list of problems later...

350s, 396, and 427,s are in no way interchangeable as the 396 and 427 are big blocks. the 427 cant be bored to fit 350 internals as they are smaller, and why would you want to anyway? a 383 is a great motor, i have built several of them over the years. to make a 383 you must get a 350 block, get it looked at by a machine shop to determine if its worth building. if it is, then you must get the block bored .030 over, and have the block clearanced for a 3.75 inch crank. what makes a 383 stroker is the longer stroke of the crank. a stock 350 crank is 3.48 where as a 400sbc is 3.75. the longer stroke increases the displacement of the engine. you will also want to go to a 6.0 inch rod, you can get stroker rotating assemblies from eaglerod.com. you will also want to go with aluminum heads. i personally prefer dart, or brodix heads. you will want your heads to have a 64cc combustion chamber. with one of eagles -5cc piston rotating assemblies. with a .040 thickness head gasket will get you 10.5:1 compression ratio. choose a cam that will work with this compression ratio. the aluminum heads will stay cooler than the cast iron ones, and the larger cam will provide more bleed off of the compression (dynamic compression is much more important than static) and allow you to run this on 93 pump gas. do not start the build untill you have between 5-7k to throw at it... i also recommend a roller cam over flat tappet, and roller rockers over the punched ones, as they cause less friction, and less friction is free HP. do not go the tbi/tpi swap way with this motor. it will cost more money, and wont allow you to get as much out of the motor. go with a holley EFI set up...
