Well, after much adventure, i finally got the timing chain replaced and the engine put back together. But now can really hear the lifters clicking (it's almost a tap its so loud) and i think it is still out of time, because it is backfiring out of the carbeuretor (no flame, just smoke and a huge drag on performance). And I think I punctured the lower radiator hose. No biggie there, i know how to replace that, but how can i properly get it in time, and fix the lifters from clicking? (i do know that the car needs a tune up and that is on my list of things to do)

If this were me....and I've been there. Start with the basics. Pull #1 spark plug, and while someone else "BUMPS" the starter, put your finger OVER....not in the #1 spark plug hole.....Once the pressure from inside the cylinder pushes you finger off the hole, you'll have #1 piston at TOP DEAD CENTER. Now remove the distributor cap and carefully check to see if your rotor is pointing to where you have the #1 plug wire in the cap. If it's not, you're timing is off...why? how? dunno...hard to diagnose over the 'puter! ;>)
I always try and keep the math simple....you know....1+1.....
If you have PROPER fuel delivery, and you have a good spark, then something is keep the two from coming together!
Now "MMANTER" made a good comment...is there enough fuel going through the carb?? If you haven't replaced the fuel filter....REPLACE IT! It's cheap insurance. You said the plug wires were trashed....REPLACE THEM. That whole thing about cheap insurance again.
I've been in your shoes......it can tear your hair out......just try and keep it simple.
Good luck!
