Default 95 cavalier starter no disengage

hi i have a 95 cavalier that i just put a new starter in. the starter gear needed to be replaced so i replace complete starter.now it turns over and even once the motor is running, the starter is still engaged and running.can turn off ignition and even remove key and it will continue to start and run at same time. i have tried with shims and without shims. only way to stop is remove battery cable.is this a relay or solinoid problem or a mounting (shimms ) problem. i am not havin fun no more. help please

It is not a shim problem. Sounds more like a short or something is miswired. Possibly a stuck contact in the ignition switch.

I have to agree... sounds like a short or mis-wiring somewhere...
What was the original problem that lead to the starter being replaced?

thanks for responding. the starter gear (bendix) had packed it in so when i checked prices it seemed like a good idea to replace the whole unit instead of just the gear.the first couple of times i tried it ,the starter sounded kinda growly but did stop when i released the key. the next time it sounded ok but would not stop. i am giving the car to a friend so i really dont want to spend any more on it but i would like to give her something that works. thanks for the help so far.
