Default 95 problems

Mines a 1995, 4cyl, 2.2 liter, auto with 120k miles, and has been givin me all sorts of trouble. It seems to be running sluggish. Sometimes when Im accelerating it tends to "chug" and the car kinda shakes a bit. Also when I idle at traffic lights mostly or just turn the car on, the whole car begins shaking and usually doesnt stop til i put it in gear. It also gets stuck in first gear sometimes. Usually when I first turn it on Ill start driving and it will get up to about 20mph when its completely floored and not shift up. I dont know a whole lot about cars, but I checked the spark plugs and the far left one had black (gas) im guessing all over it so I replaced the spark plugs hopin it may do some
good but havent noticed any change yet If anyone knows any reason for why I could be having these problems please let me know, Im very tight on money right now so I dont really have a lot of cash to experiment on diff parts. Thanks.

Default RE: 95 problems

You might have the codes checked, some of the national brand autostores will check codes for free.

If you have obd 1, you can check the codes yourself, put a jumper betewwen the A&B terminals at the data link connector, turn the key on, no crank. The CEL will start flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. There is info all over the web telling how to access those codes.

It is costly to maintain a vehicle, if it hasn't had a tune-up in a while, start there. Change all the filters, plug wires, check fuel pressure. If there is a problem with the idle, I would check the idle air system. You might remove the IAC and clean it off, there may be a spec for how far the pintle sticks out, when you go to put it back in. I don't have that info in front of me. You could take the throttle-body off, give it a good cleaning, make sure the passages are clear.
