Default are all cavalier starters the same?

I have a 2001 2.2 5-speed manual transmission coupe. I am getting all sorts of conflicting info about whether starters are different for models with auto trans vs manual, or other variables. A lot of places don't ask about this and I hate the thought of getting under there with a new starter and it doesn't fit/work.

Related to that - do I have to deal with removing the bell housing cover or not? That is another area where I get all sorts of different answers. Some make it sound like the starter just slides right in with a few bolts - others make it sound like it is a nightmare and you need all sorts of special attachments and long extensions to reach the bolts for the housing cover. What is the story?

thanks

Disconnect the battery, remove starter, take it to parts store and match it up with the new one (not a rebuild, a new one). Or pull it off in the parking lot of the parts store!

Surely there is some place that lists all the cross-reference numbers. I have searched for a starter using my car's specs on a bunch of different websites, the copied and pasted all the numbers to a file - there are at least 40 different numbers. And the problem is that some sites say a number will fit and I'll go to a different seller, type in that number, the starter comes up, but it says it doesn't fit. And the prices range from about $35 to about $200 so I am trying to find out if the less expensive ones are the same/identical but because the numbers are all over the place, it is next to impossible. It's a 20-yr-old car - only way to be sure is to take it off and compare - cheap starters don't last.
