Another Passlock issue...

1998 cavalier 2.2 auto. Car was towed in with a no crank/no start issue. The dumbass who was trying to fix it told my customer it was a bad ignition lock cylinder causing the theft system to keep the car from starting. So $350 to the dealer for a new lock cylinder the car still doesn't crank. Tech then said it was a bad IPC. Used IPC installed still no crank. Car was given to me (senior tech) to fix. Turned out that the vehicle had a bad ignition switch the whole time (not the cylinder the switch). The old lock cylinder is in the garbage and all we have is the new one which I cannot get to program into the car. I have the oem cluster in, and the car keeps throwing a code for r-code unlearned. If I clear it it comes directly back (Modus). Going through the flow chart for the code it's saying to replace the lock cylinder and then to re-program it (programming procedure is to cycle key have theft light blink for ten min then repeat the process 2 more times). My problem is that I cannot get the system to flash for ten min. I have tried and tried and tried. We've had the vehicle at the dealer and it's come back the same way. Try to re-program it and it just goes into short tamper mode (light flashes for 10 seconds and then stays on steady throws the r-code unlearned back at us). Any suggestions???

I have the same problem with my car right now.. Ive
tried repramming the ign cylinder 3 times on the run possition
for 10min's but cant be reprogrammed, the engine shuts off..
I noticed that my theft light doesn't blink just stays steady on..
Im gonna try replacing the ign switch

Passlock Issue

Hello Folks

I spoke with the folks at GM on 10-25-2011.

I was informed that if enough people call to inform them about the Pass Lock issue they will issue a recall to repair this defect.
I recently had the unfortunate experience of dealing with the folks listed below

These folks offer the Worse service I ever experienced. While waiting for my car to be repaired I spoke with people who had actually returned five times for problems that were unresolved

I called their service department in July and scheduled an appointment.

My issue was a simple one. My vehicle (Hummer H3) randomly fails to turnover for no apparent reason. I did notice that the pass lock light appeared, and according to the manual you have to wait exactly ten minutes (ridiculous) before attempting to restart your vehicle. I thought this was really insane. It had happened three times during the month of July.

I decided to do a Google search and to my surprise I found that a large number of folks who own the Hummer series along with many other Chevy customers have been experiencing the same issue. I made copies of a large number of complaints and took them with me to show them to the service manager at the dealership listed above. They told me they have never heard of this issue and this is a first. I was shocked and offered to show them the copies I had made from the web detailing the issues experienced by hundreds of customers and they were not interested.

They were definitely interested in getting a $125.00 fee to place the vehicle on the computer and run a check. Anyway, $452.00 later the vehicle was returned to me with a new battery among other things. I thought my problem was resolved. Two weeks later the same thing happened again. I was at a restaurant with my wife and had to wait ten minutes to start the car after trying to leave.

I contacted the dealership again and they asked if I can bring the vehicle back and leave it for a few days to try and isolate the problem. This meant I would need to rent a vehicle while they figure out a way to rob me again. There is no way I would do any further business with those crooks

I am infuriated that this is a problem experienced by most Chevy owners and GM is not willing to acknowledge it. Instead, they continue to charge loyal customers exorbitant amounts of money to fix an issue which is undeniably a legitimate manufacturer's defect.
I am asking everyone to call the 800 number listed at the beginning of this issue and complain loudly and force GM to do the right thing.

And they wonder why folks don't buy American cars anymore.

Update: This morning (10-27-2011) I stopped at the local QuikTrip here in Atlanta to fill up before going to work. Replaced the gas cap, climbed into my vehicle, turned the key and guess what....the vehicle failed to start again. Waited exactly ten minutes and the car started successfully.

I think I will contact the local news and radio station here. Taxpayers bailed out this company and they lack the integrity to put out a decent product. Let me explain something to the GM Company. I will use every means available to me to inform every one of your deceptive business tactics. How dare you GM folks charge for your defects.

Okay folks, I was contacted by the people directly from GM

They made arrangements for me to take the car to the dealership again. I called and made an appointment and they informed me that GM would take care of the expenses.

They kept the car for the day and found out what was causing the passlock issue. They replaced the defective ignition hardware. GM absorbed the cost and so far I had not had any issues. It is unfortunate that I had to go through this turmoil, but in the end I am a satisfied customer.
