What year is your car/engine? If it is 96 or newer you can take it to Auto-Zone or Advance Auto Parts and they will check it for free. It dosen't matter if the light is on when they check it either. It will store the codes until it is reset.
If it is 95 or older the light will have to be on for them to check it.
The new engine may have just had a bad sensor on it when you got it.

Take your car to Auto-Zone or Advance Auto Parts, they will check it for free. If it is not on when you get there so long as the battery hasen't been disconnected it will still show the trouble code.
