head gasket replacement 96 cavalier
I see a few questions about overheating and 'still runs rough after replacing head gasket' but is there a thread on actual steps to replace head gasket anywhere?
I have my Haynes manual and started the tear down but I'd like to know what all has to come off so I don't remove more than I need to if possible.
So far I have removed:
- air intake
- upper rad hose
- alternator
- exhaust manifold is unbolted
Now I'm a little unsure as to what's next:
- the upper intake assembly has to be removed and do I just unhook the fuel regulator somehow?
- lower intake stays on the block right?
- how does the power steering assembly get detached?
- the bracket on the passenger side of the engine where the pulleys are connected what all needs to get removed?
This is a 2.2L model.
Do steps like this get posted somewhere?

Update:
- supported engine underneath and removed bolts on upper engine mount
- removed bolts connected to upper engine mount to cylinder head accept one which is half hidden behind power steering pulley
- removed 3 bolts through pwr steering pulley holes but still seems connected - is there a 4th one underneath?
That's what I'll be researching now...
Update 2:
- Found the bolt at the back of the power steering bracket - so at least for my 1996 cav it has 4 bolts.
- once the power steering unit is detached I can get at the last bolt on the upper engine mount
- Cylinder head is removed.
Just need to clean it and decide if head needs to be planed or not.
