Default shift cable 04 cavaliar

Shifted into reverse and now it is stuck in reverse. I can move the selector into all other locations, park, drive etc. but car remains in reverse. Where do I start, how do I remove console?

Hey John,

1) Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2) Remove the center console. There are 4 bolts.
1 in the foward map tray.
1 Just under center switch pop out piece.
2 inside the Main holder section, all the way at the bottom.

3) Disconnect the cable ends from the shifter.

4) Remove the forward cable from the anchor.

5) Remove the reverse cable from the anchor.

6) On the transmission end, disconnect the forward cable end from the shift actuator.

7) Disconnect the reverse cable from the shift actuator.

8) Remove both cables from the underhood cable bracket.
Position aside the passenger front carpet.

9) Remove the rear floor duct elbow.

10) Separate the grommet from the floor plan.
Pull the cables through the passenger floor opening.

--INSTALLATION--
11) Feed the cable assembly through the passenger floor pan opening.

12) Install the grommet flush with the floor opening.

13) Install the rear floor right side elbow duct.
Position and install the passenger side carpet.

14) Install the cables into the underhood bracket.

15) Connect the reverse cable to the shift actuator.

16) Connect the forward cable to the sift actuator.

17) Install the reverse cable to the anchor.

18) Install the forward cable to the anchor.

19) Connect the cables to the shifter.
Install the console.
Connect the battery.

Please note that this is just a rudimentary write-up that I posted. For further elaboration on each step I would consult a Haynes manual or I could possibly provide illumination on particularly challenging steps. Additionally, I find that it helps immensely to consult diagrams of all components that you are working on. Here is a handy shift control diagram that may be of assistance to you. Hope this helps you out!

Thanks for the info Bow Tie Guy, I fixed it, I think the hardest part was getting the console out of the way, getting the boot off the e-brake, and the T-handle on the gear shift through the holes in the console, and then getting it back together again.
